A Field Guide to the Snails of Lord Howe Island

123 Mt Gower summit. Image C. Stehn. Remarks. This species is only known from a single shell. It differs from its congeners in its moderately spaced rather than finely spaced ribs and its wider umbilicus. Charopinesta suavis Iredale, 1944 Sweet Pinhead Snail Shell. Size: H = 1.4 mm, D = 2.6 mm. Colour: Golden amber. Shape: Depressedly turbinate with a low, stepped spire; sutures impressed; whorl profile rounded. Sculpture: Protoconch smooth; teleoconch with fine, very closely spaced radial ribs and weak spiral lirae. Aperture: Roundly lunate. Umbilicus: Moderately widely open. Animal. Not known. Key distinguishing features. Small size. Habitat and occurrence. Mt Lidgbird summit. Extremely rare, possibly extinct. Remarks. This species is only known from a single shell. However, since very minimal collecting has taken place on Mt Lidgbird, it still may be extant. It bears a close resemblance to C. goweri (recorded from Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird) but is considerably larger. Charopinesta suavis differs from C. sema in its finer ribs, narrow umbilicus and larger size.
