A Field Guide to the Snails of Lord Howe Island
85 Helicarionidae. A. Epiglypta howeinsulae . B. Gudeoconcha sophiae sophiae. C. Gudeoconcha sophiae magnifica. D. Howearion belli . E. Howearion hilli . F. Parmellops etheridgei . G. Parmellops perspicuus . Most helicarionids are found in rainforest or wet sclerophyll forest, although some species are adapted to drier conditions and can be found in dry or semi-arid woodland. Some species are litter-dwellers and others are arboreal or semi-arboreal. Some semislugs, with their reduced, often flattened shells, are able to hide in small crevices such as cracks in rocks. The Lord Howe Island helicarionids include four genera and nine species and subspecies, three of them considered to be extinct ( Epiglypta howeinsulae , Gudeoconcha sophiae conica and G. sophiae intermedia ) and one ( G. sophiae magnifica ) Critically Endangered, and were revised in detail by Hyman & Ponder (2016). These species have been shown to comprise a single radiation, with nearest relatives in the genus Nitor from the NSW/Qld border in eastern Australia (Hyman & Köhler, 2018). 10 mm
