A Field Guide to the Snails of Lord Howe Island

116 Family Punctidae (Pinhead or Dot Snails) Genus Allenella Iredale, 1944 Shell. Size: H = 1.6-2.6 mm, D = 2.4-3.6 mm. Colour: Amber to dark brown. Shape: Depressedly to globosely turbinate with a low to moderate conical spire; sutures impressed; whorls rounded above and below a rounded to angulate periphery. Sculpture: Protoconch with spiral lirae; teleoconch with closely spaced radial ribs or growth lines and spiral lirae. Aperture: Ovately lunate. Umbilicus: Narrowly open. Animal. Grey to dark brown. Habitat and occurrence. Island wide, with one species in the northern regions and two in the southern mountains. Remarks. This genus is endemic to Lord Howe Island. Originally A. formalis and A. planorum were described as subspecies of A. formalis , but they are treated as full species by recent authors (Smith et al., 2002; Stanisic et al., 2010). Allenella differs from other Lord Howe Island punctids by its larger size, fine sculpture, depressedly to globosely turbinate (to discoidal) shape and narrow umbilicus.
